Embracing your Grey Hair? Here’s how to style with confidence.

When you embrace your grey hair, it can be a difficult but empowering time for many women. It often presents an opportunity to look at what you wear and how you style. This article will show you the easy way to find your personal style so you can dress with confidence.

I have simplified a way to do this by identifying three words will help define your personality. Identifying your personality so that can be reflected in what you wear is a powerful exercise. After all, how you present yourself to the world has a big impact on how you interact with those around you.

Whilst many stylists use the three word style rule, and I am by no means the first, what I have curated is an easy way for you to find these words and use them to make decisions when dressing and shopping.

Finding your three style words makes dressing daily a doddle and making good shopping choices all the more likely. Let's look at how you can come up with three words that will be the foundation of your Personal Style. This will help you become more confident with how you dress.

Step 1- How would you describe your basic style?

To keep things simple, I use the following guidelines. These, are there to help you decide what is your best fit (excuse the pun!) in terms of the clothes you reach for and wear.

(a)Classic- Classic is a style word to describe someone who tends to reach for items of clothing like shirts, blouses, basic tops and denim.

(b)Boho- By boho, I mean blousy sleeves, and flowing skirts. Rarely anything tight but rather loose, relaxed and feminine.

(c)Vintage- Vintage is a style that describes someone who loves vintage purchases and unique clothes that have been pre-loved. They get a thrill from a great find in a flea market, charity shops and second-hand markets. Most of their clothes are vintage, pre-loved or commissioned.

(d)Punk/Grunge- Think, black boots, leather jacket, piercings. That kind of vibe.

(e)Preppy- Think of Chanel tweed jackets or similar, neat and put-together coordinating outfits, structured bags and expensive-looking jewellery and accessories and neat hair.

(f)Street- A person with street style will throw on all different types of mismatched clothes, and it looks good. Think of graphic t's, trainers and boots, relaxed hair and slouchy bags.

Whilst you may fall into more than one category, choose a word that BEST describes you because we have two more words to consider for a more rounded personal style guide.

My word is classic because I mostly reach for relaxed tops and simple classic blouses. I often wear denim and plain sneakers and colours like navy or black, simple classic handbags and sunglasses when I go out.

How would you describe your personality?

Think of a way to describe yourself and how what you wear reflects that. Some examples might be words like minimal or unfussy/ quirky/ fun/ flamboyant. A word to describe your personality and the feeling it evokes. This will help you discover how you want your style to reflect your unique personality and what you choose to wear to reflect it. This will become your second word.

My word is minimal because I don't like fuss. I am not particularly flamboyant. Whilst I certainly can be fun at times, my main word would be minimal, and I represent my fun side with pops of colour in what I wear, but overall I am minimal or unfussy. Choose a word you feel most comfortable to describe yourself and use that as your second word.

What is your lifestyle, and how do you want to dress to feel confident and the most 'you'?

How would you describe how you want to feel while going about your everyday life? It needs to be quite broad to help you represent the different aspects of our lifestyles. Is being relaxed your main objective so you can feel unrestricted while you work and play. Do you want to be show-stopping (red is your favourite colour and you never go out without high heels!).

Perhaps you have a lavish lifestyle. With that, you are likely to want to look sophisticated. Artsy- you always wear something that is hand made, creative and different. This word can be a reflection of how you describe yourself. Indeed, it could represent your work and how you want to represent yourself or indeed, both. Use my examples or come up with your own!

My word would be relaxed. While I like to look sophisticated, I felt that word didn't fully describe me or my lifestyle. Yet feeling relaxed in my clothes and not feeling restricted in any way, is more me. I don't like stiff fabrics or anything itchy on my skin or too tight items. Relaxed, however, does not mean I live in my leisure wear. While I do love a lounge set, my main 'go to' items of clothes are;

  • Jeans with stretch
  • Trainers, pumps or sandals,
  • Relaxed t shirts, shirts and jumpers and tops tucked in.
  • I am not a big tailored 'jacket wearer' but I love oversized jackets and relaxed coats that are not too tight.

Now it's your turn...

After reading this article, you can develop your own three Personal Style words. These words will be a great starting point. They will help you look at the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe and whether each piece of clothing represents you. I might have just given you an excuse to declutter. It will also be useful when you are shopping for new pieces. Helping to ensure that you get maximum cost per wear. That is good for you, your bank account and the environment.
